ECM – Enterprise content management is a term that has developed over the past few years to encompass several technologies related to managing unstructured data - information kept outside of a database. Technologies falling under the ECM umbrella include

As you can guess by its definition, it is very important for ECM applications to interact with other applications. This interaction not only helps to connect the elements of an ECM system, it also connects the ECM system to data-driven, line-of-business applications such as accounting, ERP, manufacturing, and CRM systems that are related to, and utilize, the data from unstructured content. Recently, services oriented architecture, or SOA, has been embraced by ECM vendors as a simlified way of creating this integration.
